Choosing It

At work right now I’m teaching a group on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – the relationship between your thoughts, feelings, and actions. The last two weeks I have been focusing on helping the kids decide to make a choice to actively engage in actions or activities that create positive feelings and thoughts that enable them to avoid their habitually negative behaviors. That sounds confusing, but it’s simple…. If you engage in activities that make you have happy feelings and thoughts you’ll be more likely to engage in more positive behaviors and have more happy thoughts and feelings and the cycle will continue. Makes sense, right? Yes, but it also seems like a really hard concept for a lot of people to grasp.
I’ve had a lot of fun reading about this because it’s something that I’ve been obsessed with my entire “adult” life – how can I be happy, or feel more fulfilled in my life, right now. Not five or ten or one year down the road but right now. It’s something I’m constantly grappling with, discussing, and thinking about. I like to think of happiness as being something I have control over and something I’m making active decisions to have in my life. So, as I’ve been encouraging the boys at work to think of activities they can participate in to feel more fulfilled I’ve been thinking of things I do that make me feel this sense of contentment or happiness in my own life. Are you ready for it? Because it’s a long list… spending time with Davis (duh), watching RW/RR Challenge (obviously) and The Bach, training for our annual relay race, going out to dinner, creating things, lunch dates with friends, Sunday dinners, winning big $$ in hearts tournaments, reading good books, learning something new (currently skiing), coming up with fun YW’s activities, having a good session with a kid at work, cuddling with Lyla, InstaGram, concerts, singing in my car, long baths, girls nights, project days with my mom, holding my nieces and nephews, chick- flicks, etc. the list goes on and on, and it doesn’t really matter what’s on it but it’s good for me to look at to remind myself that I have the control to be happy at the end of the day, and if I’m not happy I need to do something to change it.

Time Apart

It's been over five years since I've talked to Davis every day. We aren't talking a little "how's it going" every day. We're talking constant texts, tweets, emails, 30 second phone calls, and instagrams along with hours of nonstop talking every night. That's why it's hard for me when we're apart and let's face it, we do our share of time apart. Last week Davis was in Korea for 5 days, then I went to St George without him for the weekend and now he's in NY hanging out with all of our besties without me. It's crazy how even when I'm having the time of my life, if we are apart, I'm always counting down the hours until I see him again. I guess I'm lucky I found somebody I never ever ever get sick of and am always dying to tell him the tiniest part of my days. I just wish time didn't move so slow when he's away. Hurry up and get back here. We miss you.

This weekend was packed full of Christmasy fun. Friday we dressed up in our best. Saturday D and I did some Christmas shopping. Sunday D gave a thought and sang in a fireside one of our friends organized. He of course blew the crowd away. I got a good one. Here's to more celebrating this week!

The week of Thanksgiving we ate a lot with family and friends, had sleep overs with family and friends, had hearts tournaments ( I won $100!), took naps, and then I worked on Sunday... Just the usual. It was real nice to have Thursday and Friday off though.

It's Been Nice Around These Parts

Winter of 2007/2008 was horrible. I was living in a crappy apartment, in a crappy neighborhood, with some very annoying (and a couple nice) roommates, work was stressing me out, I was homesick and questioning my decision to stay in NYC after graduation, Michele had abandoned me and moved to DC, and Davis and I fought and threatened each other with a breakup every day. I remember crying a lot that winter. I was constantly evaluating every aspect of my life and trying to figure out why I wasn't happy and what I needed to do to change it. What did I need to do to put me where I needed to be? I thought about running away from everything and starting over again .... Moving back to Utah? A European extravaganza? Cali? None of these lovely options felt right, and so I hunkered down and continued the drudgery of everyday life. As the temps warmed up things started to change for me. Nothing huge happened, but I was able to make changes to be happy. I moved into a cute new place with normal people, started excelling at and enjoying my job, fell back in love with the city, and something magical started happening with Davis. During that summer, I stopped stressing out about the future and started living in the moment. I have so many fun memories of that time because I opened up to new friends and new adventures and was genuinely happy. The new warmth I gained over the summer carried over into the fall and everything in life was falling into place. That was the fall we decided to get married. I remember being overcome with happiness for everything going on around me. I was living in a bubble where nothing could go wrong (even if it was going wrong). Davis losing his job? Who cares. Not being able to get rid of Davis and Ron's lease? No biggie? Moving into the bachelor pad WITH Davis AND Ron? SURE! The bubble didn't last forever, I guess that would be impossible. The first year of marriage brought unexpected challenges for two people used to being able to do whatever they wanted whenever they wanted to do it. I've had my share of rollercoaster rides since then, but every once in a while, I have moments that are so perfect I want to preserve them in a snow globe so I can shake them up whenever I want to see them again. I've been feeling this way the last few months. I want to capture every little moment and save it forever. The best part of it is that nothing fancy has been going on but something amazing has been happening. Sometimes things are just a little easier for no apparent reason. It makes me scared for what is ahead because I know this will pass, but until it does... Here's to Fall 2011 when new jobs were started, mountains were climbed, rivers were walked along, books were read, songs were sung, dogs were cuddled, Settlers was won (by me), roads were tripped, friends were around (everyday), family was close by, and husbands and wives cuddled on the couch watching trashy TV. And don't forget about the hustlin'.

Highlights included the statue dance, Sasha and Twitch's number w Ricky covering and, of course, Melanie's solo. I can't stop thinking about that solo. Emotions were high and tears were shed... One of the things i really miss about NYC is Broadway. We've gone to a few community shows since being back in Utah but I've left all of them wishing I was back in NYC. On Friday Davis took me to see Joseph at Hale and it was surprisingly REALLY great. I secretly wish Joseph had been played by Donny, but other than that one small thing, I wouldn't have changed a thing. All weekend Davis and I sang " Any Dream Will Do" in harmony. Believe me, we sound amazing.

After being indecisive about a trip to the Wind Rivers we decided to stay home and relax a little. We played SEVEN games of Settlers with SEVEN different people, went up the canyon FOUR times, took ONE nap, went out to eat TWICE, cooked dinner ONCE, and I got ONE new church calling after avoiding it successfully for over a year. Going back to real life is turning out to be harder than expected.

saturday we got some duckies and headed down the snake. the river was one of the funnest heights I've ever been on it. Every rapid was the perfect mix of almost tipping but not being too scary. there's a new rapid too that was created by the landslide that was kind of amazing. it was amazing until we tipped over at the end of it. I was caught under the raft and Davis floated off down the riv. some randoms saved Davis from the next round of rapids and P&T picked me up. after our tip the skies got pretty cloudy and then we were hit by some of the hardest rain ever. at the end we hitch hiked back to the car and warmed up with some hot chocolate. a pretty exciting day!

I decided to extend my east coast extravaganza with one last stop in DC to visit Michele. Nici met me in NYC and we took the bus down together... It only took us three hours longer than expected to get there. UGH. Sunday night we stayed up until 4 chatting then we woke up around 11 and stayed in bed until 130 chatting MORE... basically the chatting didn't stop. After convincing ourselves to get out of bed we hit up Georgetown, where we spent the summer of '05 spending all of our student loan money on clothes and tanning beds. That night we met up with Barlow friends Joe and Mike for dinner and dessert. Today we topped it off with a mellow day at some monuments and a museum. Now I'm sitting in the Denver airport waiting for my delayed flight wishing I could live the last two weeks on repeat for the rest of my life.

Coyote Gulch

Last weekend we headed to Coyote Gulch right outside of Escalante with Matt and Annie and Pinks for a little fun. There are so many things I want to remember about this trip. Like the crazy drive there... I think we had to swerve to miss animals 5 or 6 times. Then Matt told D, "If we come to animal don't swerve, just hit it." It was too dark for us to see the road on the way there, but on the way home we realized we were driving along the very top of the mountain without any guard rails on either side. It was quite the crazy drive, but the scenes were amazing. My two favorite parts... hiking around for two days without shoes and catching frogs. Oh, and maybe the yummy food we ate as a reward for all of our hard work. Oh, and maybe Matt and D hauling Pinks up and out of the canyon at the end. Good times.

I'd been dying that I hadn't watched at all so last night I took advantage of Davis being gone and watched the 6 hours of performances (don't worry, i skipped a loooooooot of the judges and the goofing around, ugh). Now that I'm all caught up I can watch the rest of the season without feeling stressed that I'm behind.

Jump, Jump

I've jumped off quite a few scary things in my life... bungee jumping a few times and many many cliffs. I always pictured myself taking a huge leap off the edge and flying through the air. Then I saw a video of the baby step I took off a bungee platform a few years back and realized that I am the biggest baby when it comes to jumping. I always take the smallest baby step ever. We went cliff jumping in St. George, and a little girl was watching us and right after I jumped she commented on me almost hitting the rock below because I didn't jump out far enough. Then of course Katie went after me and had to do some soaring leap to make my baby step look even worse. I don't know what it is, but I don't think I'll ever be a leaper. Baby steps have always worked out pretty well for me.

24 Hours

I feel like I have been going 90 miles an hour since I started working full-time, but last week just about put me over the edge. I literally worked NINETY HOURS. That might not seem like a lot to you crazies out there who work yourselves to death, but I am not one of those people, and it was a little out of control for me. Somewhere between those working hours I found some time to have some good times ... a movie night with Kristan and Coach T, a sleepover at my mom's, a bike ride with N&D, and then Craig came to town for the weekend so I spent some quality time with D and the boys... we even hit up RAGING WATERS, and I of course won our big game of Hearts... good times. Anyway, Saturday morning when I was heading home from work at 7:30am I realized I had been awake for over 24 HOURS. It's kind of crazy that you can actually have a plan for every minute of the day...

Friday:
7am -- wake-up
8:30am -- arrive at work
2:30pm -- leave work to go meet D, Craig, and Ryan and Macy at Hire's for onion rings and root beer
4:30pm -- hit up P&T's to pay Romey a little visit and get ready for the night
5:30pm -- D picked me up to head to a reception with the other boys
9pm -- leave reception for dinner at Cheesecake. Blake and I shared because D is an impossible person to try to share with.
11pm -- leave SLC to head back to work in P-town. I was lucky enough to get out of the first 5 hours of my shift.
SATURDAY 7am -- finish up work and head home....
7:45am -- BED, finally!
I squeezed in 4 hours of sleep before hitting the water slides! Don't worry after working another 12 hour shift on Sunday I slept for twelve hours. You'd think that would be enough but I feel like I'm still recovering. Hopefully the four days of camping we have planned this weekend will be just what I need....

We just got back from a low key weekend in Wyoming. We made it out of the house for a pretty run on Saturday but that was about it. The most exciting event was Lyla getting into poison and going to the puppy ER at midnight. Now it's back to reality and my alarm is set for 3am. Just the right time to begin a 90 hour work week... I'm not too excited about it.

A couple of weeks ago we went up Provo Canyon for tin foil dinners and s'mores. It got kind of chilly so Lyla was up my jacket most of the night and Amelia was completely obsessed with her. Every few minutes she would come running over to me and say, "I wanna hold me the puppy." It's amazing that every little kid remains obsessed with Lyla even when she's not the nicest. Hopefully she'll warm up to Amelia....

5 Year Reunion

A few weeks ago Karen and Bryndee took a break from their fancy lives in London and NYC to visit the small-town girls in Utah. Bryndee, Kristan and I met for mid-week brunch to start the festivities off. Then Karen got in and we had a sleepover and stayed up too late catching up on all of the little things that we used to spend EVERY DAY talking about. We all moved to NYC around the same time and found each other instantly (along with a couple others). I don't think Michele and I would have made it through our first few months without them. I'm constantly trying to convince the rest of them to move to Utah, but I know that will never happen so I'm left with what I can get..... Days like the one Karen and I had after our sleepover where we slept then made our way to brunch with no other plans for ourselves. Then at the same time, we suggested going shopping, like we didn't already know that's what we'd be doing. After a few HOURS of shopping we left the stores with substantially less money than we arrived with because that's what we do, we talk each other into making crazy purchases that we would never make with anybody else and we giggle about it. As we make our next plan we both suggest at the same time AGAIN movie. Who were we kidding this time? We knew that's how we'd end our reunion because... That's just how we do it. For a whole day I felt like it was five years ago, and we were back in the city without a care in the world. Now if we could only make it happen more often.

Slickrock of Death

We went down to Moab for the long weekend. My brothers were really wanting to do Slickrock and asked if Davis and I wanted to join. I was reluctant (because I didn't want to hold them back), but they talked me into it. I think it was probably the hardest thing I've ever been talked into. The first couple of hours were fun... screaming down the shoots, and pedaling my little heart back up, but at lunch (when we stopped and shared a granola bar and a couple of almonds because we were told it would only take us around 2 hours... it took over double that) my body was ready to be done, and we weren't even half way!! Then we ran out of water, and I started thinking about what would happen if I just sat myself down and died. Somehow we made it out alive, and it was actually a lot of fun despite the pain my ENTIRE body was feeling. My bros were nice and took good care of us while they were waiting for us. It gave them plenty of time to take millions of pics of the fancy sights....

The past week has been a little crazy with all of the running around I've been doing. I'm pretty sure Lyla and I cover more miles in the Prius than any other duo in the history of human life. The weird thing is even with all of the running around I'm feeling so fulfilled. In the last five days I've spent crazy hours at my TWO jobs that I am loving, attended a fun fam dinner, long boarded down the canyon, pumped the boys up for Duck over Sushi desserts, camped out with besties in the pouring rain, sang and danced my heart out at the best concert of my life, was on 2News!, had a girlie sleepover, ate a fancy dinner with my grandpa, shopped with my mom, gone on after-work river walks, AND caught up on TV homework with D Dawg. Ah! None of this is anything fancy but love being busy and spending time with the people I love. Here's to more of that in the desert sun this weekend!

After a long day at work we went up the canyon and walked around for a few hours. It was kind of amazing. I wanted a fam pic so we asked a stranger. I gave her my phone and she immediately got down on her knee to take the pic. Ugh. I always hate that. I never want to be mean and bossy when randoms are being nice to take a pic but really... Aren't people aware that pics taken like that are always horrible?? It's a lesson everyone needs to learn just to be a good citizen of the world. Don't you think??

Since I've known The Eastmans for basically my entire life, I knew that when they invited us over for dinner it would NOT disappoint. Let's just say they lived up to the expectations. We made our very own sushi with ALL of the fixings. I wish we took better pics of the spread because it was so fancy with eel, spicy tuna, tuna, salmon, cream cheese, loads of veggies and a few sweet touches. I'm kind of obsessed and want to start making our own too. There's just something about rolling up all of the goodness that is so satisfying. I feel a new hobby coming on.

Our whole team, Van2, us at the finish line, and a well deserved dip in the hot tub once we were all done. Good times... can we just move to Cali now??

I don't like snakes. Remember the mishap in Thailand? Last weekend Davis kept shoving Craig and Mary's snake in my face. I about had 10 heart attacks. During one of the attacks Craig was standing there and asked if I would put Charlie up my shirt for $20. I answered that I wouldn't do it for $20, but I would do it for $100, thinking that nobody would really pay me $100 to put Charlie up my shirt. Well, he quickly scampered off to collect the goods and you can see what happened next... It wasn't pretty, but I got my $$.

Our table was getting all scratched up and I found some oilcloth for cheap so I decided to make a fancy tablecloth. It turned out pretty cute. I'm excited for all of the other ideas I have for this stuff.

In the last week we've been to two ex-Mormon shows... Arcade Fire and Brandon Flowers. Maybe leaving the church gives you the passion you need to be an amazing performer ... I don't know but both of the shows were pretty great. And Brandon was a surprise and I loved it. Davis is getting pretty good at those lately.

We took a little trip to Moab to enjoy the sun and scenes. Somebody might have gotten us lost on our way home and nearly ran us out of gas... The three hour ride turned into five but we made up for it with greasy food at Wingers in Price since it was too late to catch my fav, Little Acorn. Don't worry Moab, we will be back so soon.
